Logistics must take place very efficiently and effectively in the transport of waste and residues

Various industries

N + P has been a reliable producer and supplier of secondary fuels and raw materials for 25 years. Our company is active in various industries including the paper industry, cement industry, the ceramic industry and power plants. Examples of products supplied on a large scale by N + P are: Paper sludge, a waste stream from the production of paper; Combustible waste for waste power plants; Secondary fuels as a replacement for fossil fuels.

Low margins

Every year, N + P supplies more than two million tons to customers in various European countries – and even beyond. Because waste and residues are low-quality products, margins are low and logistics must take place very efficiently and effectively. That is why N + P specializes in finding creative solutions to perform transport within these frameworks. Our enthusiastic team is constantly looking for innovations in the field of logistics and has already achieved several good results as a pioneer.

300 tons of Subcoal ® per week

In 2013, N + P acquired a factory in Delfzijl where the patented Subcoal® is produced. In this factory ‘ non-recyclable waste ’ is innovatively processed into a fuel pellet called Subcoal®. Subcoal® has a high calorific value and replaces large-scale fossil fuels in industrial furnaces that require high temperatures in their process. In this way, on the one hand, it is prevented that the ‘ non-recyclable waste ’ ends up in a landfill and, on the other hand, the production and use of fossil fuels, such as coal, is reduced. We are currently working on a project to supply Subcoal® as a test phase to an industrial company in Austria. The transport for this is carried out by rail in collaboration with Rail Cargo Austria (RCA). RCA has developed a container sales system with which containers can be placed and / or collected on a railway wagon without the intervention of a terminal or a crane. The aim of this project is to deliver approximately 300 tons of Subcoal® per week in the long term. This means that twelve containers with six 4-axle wagons are used.

Combine flows

The latest development is also looking at full-full transport by rail to our production location in Delfzijl. In good cooperation with RCA, it has been determined where they have this type of containers empty and available in order to be able to combine the flows. This has shown that there are possibilities from the Ruhr area to transport raw materials for us by rail to Delfzijl.

Sustainable transport

The transport takes place via the spread vehicle loading transport and in general we are very satisfied with the transit times and the rates. Unfortunately, we also have a flaw, namely the lack of ‘ track and trace ’ information. Deviations from the timetable are sometimes unavoidable, but in that case we as a customer would like to be informed about this. Nevertheless, we want to continue rail transport. As a N + P, we contribute a lot to a better and more sustainable environment by reusing large amounts of waste and residues in a good way. Our business philosophy also fits in with the continued search for sustainable modes of transport, including rail transport. ”
