Rolling Highway
In this form of rail transport, the entire truck, including the tractor unit and driver, travels by rail.
The Rolling Highway (RoHi) is a unique concept within rail freight transport. It is suitable for non-craneable trailers. This concept is primarily used in the Alpine countries, where the trailer, including the tractor (truck), is transported. This is known as accompanied transport. Unaccompanied transport also takes place over longer distances.

What is intermodal transport?
Intermodal transport involves the transport of standard loading units by rail, such as containers, swap-bodies, or craneable trailers. Intermodal trains operate on the shuttle principle, meaning they shuttle back and forth between two destinations, e.g., between Rotterdam andMilaan.
An intermodal service typically has a fixed frequency, e.g., 5 times per week between Rotterdam and Melzo. This frequency can vary over time depending on the development of the cargo supply. Due to the fixed frequency, this is also known as a shuttle connection.
Fixed Departure and Arrival Times
An intermodal service also has fixed departure and arrival times, making it a highly predictable product for the customer. The customer knows in advance exactly when to deliver the container to the rail terminal and also knows when the container will be available at the terminal abroad. The predictable nature of intermodal transport has been the reason for the great success of this transport concept. Currently, about 250 container trains depart weekly from the Netherlands.
Intermodal rail operator
Multiple customers can use the same intermodal service. Each books a spot on the train with the intermodal rail operator who offers the commercial service on the market. The intermodal rail operator is responsible for the complete transport between the rail terminals. They ensure a locomotive and container wagons are available. They also handle the documentation and, if desired, tracking and tracing services so the customer can precisely monitor the status of their cargo.
Terminal-terminal
The intermodal rail operator usually limits their services to transport between two rail terminals. The pre- and post-transport by road and the handling of the loading unit are not provided by them. Most customers of intermodal rail operators are therefore logistics service providers or shipping companies that do have loading units and can handle the pre- and post-transport.
